San Sebastian Like a Local: Evening Pintxos Tour

4.8 (93 verified reviews)

About This Experience

The evening tour that deliberately avoids the tourist stretch. It starts at San Martín market, where locals shop daily, and works the Romantic Area — the elegant nineteenth-century grid between the Old Town and the beach — rather than the packed Parte Vieja counters.

Nine food tastings and four drinks over two and a half hours: the highest tasting count of any tour compared on this site.

The market opening sets the tone. You taste artisan Basque cheese and stop at a fish stall that supplies Michelin-starred kitchens, then join locals at the market bar for cider poured by you, straight from the cask in the traditional way, with a Spanish omelette and a pintxo alongside.

From there the tour reaches the bar where the gilda was created — the olive, guindilla and anchovy skewer generally credited as the first pintxo — tasted with another seasonal bite and a glass of regional Basque txakoli.

It pauses outside a third-generation wine store, now closed but worth the story, then moves on to homemade vermouth and the rest of the evening's tastings, finishing on the Concha promenade with the bay in front of you.

You will be standing for most of it and some spaces are tight, which the operator says plainly. The tour is not recommended for children under 15, and while it is adaptable for pescatarians, gluten-free and dairy-free guests, vegetarian options are limited and vegans are not accommodated.

What Travelers Say

Rated 4.8/5 by 93 verified GetYourGuide travelers.

The 'private' tour with Cristina was amazing! Definitely worth it and also very nice to eat where the locals eat. Nice dynamic!

— E., August

We really wanted to explore the food of the Basque Country, and this was a great way to do it. Ylenia was a really good guide. I have restrictions in what I can eat, and Ylenia took these into account perfectly, and was very knowledgeable, interesting, and kind. I'd definitely recommend this tour.

Very informative and varied. The selection of pintxos was unusual, so it was very interesting. In addition, the guide also provided very interesting insights into the history of San Sebastian. Guide Mila was very good!!

Frequently Asked Questions

How much food is on this evening tour?

Nine food tastings and four drinks in two and a half hours — the most tastings of any tour compared on this site. Come hungry and do not book a restaurant for afterwards.

Where does this tour go?

It starts at San Martín market, then works the Romantic Area — the nineteenth-century grid between the Old Town and the beach — rather than the busiest Parte Vieja streets. Stops include the market bar, the bar where the gilda was created, a former third-generation wine store and a bar serving homemade vermouth, finishing on the Concha promenade.

What drinks are included?

Four: Basque cider poured by you straight from the cask in the txotx style, regional txakoli — the local low-alcohol white — homemade vermouth, and one more depending on the stop. Non-alcoholic options are available.

Why start at a market in the evening?

Because San Martín is where the city actually shops, and it stays open into the evening. It gives the tour an artisan Basque cheese tasting and a fish stall that supplies Michelin-starred restaurants before you reach a single bar — context you cannot get from a counter.

Is this tour suitable for children?

It is not recommended for children under 15, because of the crowded bars and the alcohol focus. Families with younger children should look at an afternoon departure or a private tour, where the route and pace can be set around them.

Can vegetarians do this tour?

Only partly. The operator lists vegetarian options as limited and states the tour is not recommended for vegans, though it is adaptable for pescatarians, gluten-free (not coeliac) and dairy-free guests, with non-alcoholic options. If you are vegetarian, a sit-down small-group tour is a better fit.

Where exactly does it meet?

At Loiola Kalea 13, at the entrance to the San Martín market building between the FNAC and Zara stores. Arrive 15 minutes early; your guide carries a red bag or an operator sign. The meeting point is reachable only on foot.

Is it accessible?

No. The operator states the tour is unsuitable for guests with mobility impairments, wheelchairs or strollers, that most of the experience is standing, and that some spaces are tight. Luggage and large bags are not allowed.
