How a Small-Group Pintxos Tour Works
Fewer people means a seat, a conversation with the guide, and no waiting for the group to catch up.
Meet on Ijentea Kalea
Your guide meets the group on Ijentea Kalea, on the edge of the Parte Vieja between the cathedral end of the Old Town and the river. Arrive 15 minutes early — tours leave on time because the bars are expecting you.
Start With Cider, Not Wine
The first stop is a cider bar, where you learn the txotx pour — cider poured from a height to open it up, caught in a tilted glass. It is the one drink ritual every later bar assumes you already know.
Work Through Five Bars
Each bar has one thing it does better than anyone: mussels at the first, cured Iberian ham at the second, marinated anchovies at the third. Your guide orders for the group, so nothing is queued for twice.
Finish With Dessert and a Plan
The last stop is chosen for dessert and a sweet wine. You leave having eaten a full meal, with a list of the bars worth going back to on your own — which is the part most guests use the next night.

Read the Cap, Not the Adjective
"Small Group" Means Eight, Ten or Twelve — and It Matters
In a bar you can barely get an elbow into, four extra people is not a rounding error.
Every pintxos tour in San Sebastián describes itself as small-group. Most of them do not say what that means. A handful publish a number, and those are the ones worth comparing — because in a bar where you cannot get an elbow to the counter, the difference between eight guests and twelve is the difference between a conversation and a queue.
The caps that are actually published
- Ten. Eating Europe’s Beyond Pintxos tour states ten guests maximum, and — unusually — sits the group down at all five stops.
- Ten. The Premium Evening Pintxos Tour in the Old Town is listed as limited to ten participants, with tables reserved at every bar.
- Twelve. Do Eat Better’s food tour runs a maximum of twelve and asks larger parties to contact the operator first.
- Eight. The cider house tour out in the Gipuzkoa hills caps at eight, though that is a minibus constraint as much as a hospitality one.
Anything without a stated cap is a judgement call. Several of the highest-volume tours simply offer a “small group” and a “private” option and leave the number to the operator.
Why the number matters more here than elsewhere
On a walking tour of a city, group size affects how well you can hear the guide. On a pintxos tour it affects whether you get served.
The bars are small, the counters are three deep after eight o’clock, and the good food comes out hot from a kitchen working to a chalked board. A guide can hold a table for eight. At twelve, the group splits across two ends of the bar and somebody is always waiting. Guest reviews of the shared tours make this visible: the ones that read best consistently mention a group of five or six.
Seated versus standing is the other axis
This is the genuine surprise on this page. Standing is the tradition — one operator states outright that you will be on your feet in all of its bars — but two of the small-cap tours break with it deliberately.
The tour featured above sits down at every stop: five family-run bars and bakeries across Gros and the Old Town, six tastings, four pours, a hands-on pintxo you build yourself at a wine and beer shop, and a finish at the city’s oldest bakery, which the operator says has baked the same recipe since 1886. It is $116 and rated 5.0 from 16 guests.
The premium evening option reserves tables at every bar for $157. Both are, in effect, buying you a seat — which for a three-hour evening is worth more than most people expect.
Small group or private?
If your reason for wanting a small group is comfort, a ten-cap tour gets you most of the way there for a third of the price of going private. If your reason is a constraint — a child below the age floors, a dietary requirement that needs the whole route rebuilt, mobility — a small group does not solve it and a private tour does. Note that private tours here are priced per person, so the maths is not what most people assume.
What we would book
For two people, the ten-cap sit-down tour above. For four to six who want more food and do not mind standing, the twelve-cap food tour on our food tours page. For a first evening with the best atmosphere, an evening departure — and accept that the bars will be full, because that is the point.
Check availability for the tour above, or read what to expect on a pintxos tour before you choose.

What Small-Group Guests Say
Ratings and review counts are the tour operators' live figures on GetYourGuide and may shift slightly day to day.
"It was a great tour because it was only two of us and the guide. :) It was Christina's second-only tour, and she did an wonderful job. She was very flexible with the itinerary because our cruise ship left the port hours before the original departure so we had to do the tour in under 3 hours in order to get back to the ship. She helped us get a taxi, and all was good. The pintxos and the traditional cake we ate on the tour were exceptional. We especially like the cider house and wish we could return to particiapte in the annual festival!"
"I can only recommend this tour. Inés was a fantastic guide, so dedicated and brilliant at getting the group to engage with each other. She gave us a fantastic insight into the food culture, what it's like to live locally in San Sebastian and not least into the history of the city and the Basque Country."
"Iri was outstanding. The tour was excellent and Iri’s passion for local business meant we had a really customised experience, not just hitting the tourist hotspots. The follow up with suggestions about what else to do, see and eat in San Sebastian was awesome."
"We had an absolutely delightful tour with Iri from Eating Europe! It was my husband and I and one other couple, so felt like a personal tour. She is from San Sebastian so was so knowledgable about the area, history and culture, as well as the food, and she took us to some fantastic spots. We loved all the foods and drinks that were provided and Iri was so charming and helpful. She sent us a follow-up with all the places we had been, and recommendations for other places to see, and restaurants to go to- it was one of our favorite food tours we've ever had!"
"Excellent tour! Alaia was a fantastic tour guide and we had a wonderful time. Definitely one of our favorite food tours:)"

"Great, we recommend this tour with top guides. Thanks to Siri and Alaia, we'll definitely choose Eating Europe for our next trip"
"We had a fantastic tour of the pinxto bars in San Sebastian Besides the great food, our guide Iri gave us lots of info about Basque culture and its cuisine."

Small-Group Pintxos Tour FAQ
Published caps, seated versus standing, and how small is small enough.
Where operators publish a number, it is eight, ten or twelve. Eating Europe's Beyond Pintxos tour states ten guests maximum. The Premium Evening Pintxos Tour is listed as limited to ten participants. Do Eat Better's food tour caps at twelve and asks larger parties to contact them first. The cider house tour out of the city caps at eight. Tours that do not publish a cap leave the number to the operator.
Among pintxos tours in the city, two are capped at ten: the Beyond Pintxos tour, which sits its group down at all five stops, and the Premium Evening Pintxos Tour, which reserves tables at every bar. If you want fewer than ten, the only route is a private departure — and those are priced per person, not per group.
Because it decides whether you get served, not just whether you can hear the guide. The bars are small, the counters are three deep after eight o'clock, and the best food comes out hot from a kitchen working to a chalked board. A guide can hold a spot for eight people. At twelve, the group splits across the bar and somebody is always waiting.
On two of them, yes — and that is unusual. Standing is the Basque tradition, and one operator states outright that you will be on your feet in all of its bars. But the ten-guest Beyond Pintxos tour sits down at all five stops, and the Premium Evening Pintxos Tour reserves tables at every bar. For a three-hour evening, that seat is worth more than most people expect.
The ten-guest sit-down tour is $116 per person for six tastings and four pours. The twelve-guest food tour is $115 for four or more stops. The ten-guest premium evening format with reserved tables is $157. All prices include everything you eat and drink on the route.
For comfort, a ten-cap tour gets you most of the way there at about a third of the price of going private — private tours here start at $209 per person and are charged per head, not per group. For a constraint — a child below the shared tours' age floors, a dietary requirement that needs the route rebuilt, limited mobility — a small group does not solve it and a private tour does.
Yes, and it is usually the better choice for a couple. Several tours require a minimum of two adults to run at all, so a pair is exactly the right unit. The shared table is also part of the experience — guests on the shared evening tours regularly describe the group itself as one of the highlights, in a city whose whole food culture is built on standing at a bar beside people you have just met.
Six pintxo and tapas tastings and four local drink pours across five family-run bars and bakeries in Gros and the Old Town, over three hours. You build your own pintxo at a local couple's wine and beer shop, pour Basque cider the traditional txotx way, and finish at the city's oldest bakery, which the operator says has used the same recipe since 1886. A local English-speaking guide is included; gratuities and extra drinks are not.
Somewhat. The ten-guest sit-down tour states plainly that vegetarian and gluten-free guests are well accommodated, which is more than most listings commit to — though it also declines guests with severe or life-threatening allergies on safety grounds. Larger shared tours describe themselves as adaptable but warn there may not be a replacement at every stop. Flag any requirement when you book.
Yes. Ten seats on a popular evening in July go quickly, and the highest-rated tours are booked days ahead in summer. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before applies to every tour compared here, so there is no downside to booking early and deciding later.
Two adults on most tours; four on some bilingual options. If the minimum is not reached, operators contact you at least three days ahead and offer an alternative date, a different tour or a full refund. Solo travellers should check this before assuming a departure is confirmed.
The featured ten-guest tour works Gros — the surf-side neighbourhood across the river — as well as the Old Town, which is unusual: it starts near De Biteri Plaza, passes the Bretxa market, crosses into the Parte Vieja and finishes on Narrika Kalea. Most other pintxos tours stay entirely inside the Parte Vieja.
