San Sebastián Wine Tours & Tastings: The Complete Guide (2026)
Every San Sebastián wine tour compared: pintxos and wine walks, Getaria txakoli, Rioja day trips, cider houses and city tastings. 2026 prices, picks and booking tips.
If you only do one thing, make it an evening pintxos-and-wine walk through the Old Town or Gros. It teaches you how the city drinks, and you use that on every night that follows. With a spare morning, add a txakoli winery on the coast at Getaria. If wine is the reason you came, give a whole day to Rioja Alavesa. This guide compares every option with 2026 prices and our picks.
Quick answer: Book an evening pintxos & wine walking tour in the Old Town or Gros: 2.5–3 hours, 4–6 bars, about 4–5 local drinks (txakoli, Rioja Alavesa, Navarra, often cider or a sweet PX), from about €95–€155 per person on operators’ own sites, or around $120 for the two most-reviewed tours on GetYourGuide. If you have an extra morning, add a Getaria txakoli winery visit (half day, €120–€170 guided, or under €25 if you take the bus yourself). Wine lovers should give a full day to Rioja Alavesa: Laguardia’s underground cellars and Gehry’s Marqués de Riscal are about 1.5–2 hours away.

Why San Sebastián is a great wine city
San Sebastián isn’t surrounded by vineyards the way Bordeaux is. It sits at a crossroads of four wine cultures within about two hours: txakoli, the coast’s spritzy white, grown on slopes above the Atlantic in Getaria and Zarautz; Rioja Alavesa, the Basque part of Rioja, over the mountains; Navarra, to the south-east; and Irouléguy, France’s only Basque wine appellation, across the border. Add Basque cider from the orchards of Astigarraga and Hernani, a few minutes from the city, and the bar culture of txikiteo, hopping from bar to bar for a small glass and a pintxo at each, and you have one of Europe’s most enjoyable places to drink wine.
The food is serious too. Go Local San Sebastián counts 11 Michelin stars across 6 restaurants in the 2026 Guide: Arzak and Akelarre (three each), Amelia by Paulo Airaudo (two), and Kokotxa, iBAi and newcomer Itzuli (one each). Itzuli, chef Iñigo Lavado’s restaurant inside Hotel Luze in Igeldo, was listed as new in the MICHELIN Guide Spain & Andorra 2026. Many of the pintxos bars where you’ll drink charge a few euros a bite.

(a) In-city pintxos & wine walking tours
What it is: a guided bar crawl through the Parte Vieja (Old Town), Gros or Centro. Each stop pairs a house-speciality pintxo with a local glass. This is the classic “wine tasting in the city” experience.
Typical format: about 3 hours, 4–6 stops, roughly 8–10 pintxos and 4–5 drinks, groups of 8–10. Most start around 12:30 (lunch) or 18:30 (dinner).
| Operator | Tour | Duration | Price (2026) | Includes | Group size | Ratings |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Devour Tours | Pintxos and Wine Tour (Old Town) | 3 h | $120 on GetYourGuide (about €146 on Devour’s own site) | 8 pintxos + 4 drinks: cider, red, white and a dessert wine | Shared or private | 4.8/5 from 640+ reviews on GetYourGuide |
| Local Experts Tours | Pintxo tasting paired with wines | 3 h | $121 on GetYourGuide | 8 pintxos + 5 drinks: three wines from different Spanish DOs, a cider and a liqueur | Shared or private | 4.8/5 from 800+ reviews on GetYourGuide |
| Devour Tours | Pintxos & Wine in a Local Neighbourhood (Centro) | 2.5–3 h | from $122 | 10+ tastings, 5 drinks | max 8 | Smaller review base |
| Mimo | San Sebastián Pintxos & Wine (lunch 12:30 or dinner 18:30) | 3 h | €155 group; private €175–€290 pp (sliding scale) | All food, drinks, VAT | ~8 | ~4.9 on Tripadvisor (around 200 reviews) |
| Secret Food Tours | Food Tour of 12 Tastings of Locals’ Favorites | ~3 h | $119 on GetYourGuide | 12 tastings incl. cider, txakoli, Rioja | Small | 4.7/5 from 6 reviews on GetYourGuide (a thin record) |
Pros: no transport; it gets you through the bar culture (when to order, what’s hot off the kitchen, how to pay); good value per tasting; ideal on night one. Cons: you stand for most of it; wine is one element, not the whole show; the Old Town is crowded in July and August. Who it suits: almost everyone, especially first-timers and anyone with only an evening. For the full side-by-side of every pintxos tour, see which San Sebastián pintxos tour is right for you.
(b) Txakoli winery visits on the coast
Txakoli (Getariako Txakolina DO) is made mostly from the native Hondarrabi Zuri grape: according to the DO, as reported by naiz.eus in September 2026, it covers about 85% of Gipuzkoa’s vineyard area, with red Hondarrabi Beltza at 10% and other white varieties at 5%. Expect bright acidity, low alcohol (about 10.5–11.5%), a little natural spritz and a salty, Atlantic finish. The same DO statement puts the denomination at 480 hectares of registered vineyard and 32 producing wineries across Gipuzkoa. In Getaria the vines run down to cliffs above the sea, and on a clear day the view alone justifies the trip.
| Winery | Where | Visit format & price | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Txomin Etxaniz | Getaria | Family-led 90-minute visit + tasting, €22; Mon–Sat except holidays, no visits September–November | One of the founding families of the DO; the family’s records go back to 1649. Book through their web form and wait for confirmation. Sea-view terrace |
| Gaintza | Getaria | Guided visit + tasting | #1 of 18 things to do in Getaria on Tripadvisor (4.9, 128 reviews); short walk from the bus |
| Hiruzta | Hondarribia (near the French border) | Guided tour + tasting €19 (50 min, Wed–Sun & holidays at 12:00 or 13:00); Wine & Gastronomy with pintxos €39 (about 1 h 15); “Cata descubre Hiruzta” tasting only €13.50 (Wed–Sat 14:00–16:00) | Modern winery with a restaurant on site |
| Ameztoi, Talai Berri, Akarregi Txiki, K5, Elkano, Gañeta | Getaria/Zarautz/Aia | Visits mostly by appointment | Contact each winery directly for current visit formats |
Guided half-day txakoli tours from San Sebastián:
- San Sebastián Turismo (the official tourism office): €145 adults (€50 ages 12–17, €20 under 12). Includes winery visit, tasting with Getaria anchovies and gildas, guide and private transport.
- Go Local San Sebastián: 4 h, daily at 9:30, €120 adults, max 8, hotel pickup.
- Local Experts Tours: the Getaria Txakoli wine tour from San Sebastian is $168 on GetYourGuide, small group or private, with hotel pickup, the Txakoli Museum and a guided winery tasting. Rated 4.7/5 from 45 reviews.
- Private: Euskoguide’s full-day private txakoli tour from €585 per group (entry fees and food extra).
Pros: a spectacular coast, a short drive, and you can combine it with lunch at a Getaria grill (Elkano holds a Michelin star). Cons: tastings can be short. One Viator reviewer called a txakoli trip “more txakoli culture than a wine tour”, so check how many wines are poured. Txakoli is a single style, so it may not hold the interest of red-wine lovers. Our take: this is one of the best-value things you can do. Take the bus and book the winery yourself, or let a guided tour handle the hills and the driving.
(c) Rioja Alavesa day trips
The Basque part of Rioja sits under the wall of the Sierra de Cantabria. It’s a land of medieval hill towns, Tempranillo and some astonishing architecture. Most tours put the drive at 1.5–2 hours each way; our Rioja day trip from San Sebastián guide has the routes, itineraries and hotels.
Wineries to know:
- Marqués de Riscal (Elciego): founded in 1858. Frank Gehry’s titanium-ribboned hotel is
the region’s most photographed building.
- Visit 1: €30, 90 min, 3 wines with chorizo.
- Visit 2: €45, 1 h 45, includes a Gran Reserva.
- Visit 3: €60, premium wines with Iberian ham.
- Bodega El Fabulista (Laguardia): a family cellar about seven metres below an old palace in the town centre. A 75-min guided visit with 2 wines and snacks costs €12.50; with 3 wines, €16. Book ahead.
- Ysios (Laguardia): Santiago Calatrava’s wave-roofed winery. Most visitors know it for the architecture.
- Baigorri (Samaniego): a glass box on top with a gravity-fed winery below.
- Remírez de Ganuza (Samaniego): cult wines, appointment only.
- López de Heredia (Haro, Rioja Alta): a 19th-century classic for traditionalists, about 30 minutes beyond Laguardia.
Guided Rioja tours from San Sebastián:
| Operator | Format | Price (2026) | Includes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local Experts Tours | Small group, 9 h | €230 pp (Winery + lunch); €220–€240 (2 wineries) | Pickup, Laguardia, guided winery tasting, traditional lunch |
| Wine Tourism Spain | “Super Taster” small group, 9 h, Mon/Wed/Sat | Check the operator’s site | Multiple wineries |
| Wine Tourism Spain | Private, 9 h | from €335 pp | Private guide + vehicle |
| Viator “Rioja Uncorked” | Premium small group, 8.5 h | from ~$303–$356 pp | Rated 4.9 |
| Wine Tours Rioja | Private with chauffeur | €620 pp (2 people), €420 pp (4–7) | 2 wineries, lunch; +€40 pp weekends |
| San Sebastián Trips / Experience San Sebastián | Private, 8–9 h | €750 for 1–2 people (+€150–€165 per extra person, up to 7–8) | 3 wineries, lunch, Laguardia cellar caves |
| Ikusnahi Tours | Private Rioja Wine Region Day Tour | $357 pp on GetYourGuide | 3 wineries (a tour at one), 8+ wines, olive oil tasting, a medieval village and a Riojan lunch. 5.0/5, but from only 8 reviews |
Pros: this is real wine country, with world-famous names and architecture to match, and medieval Laguardia with its underground cellars. Cons: you’ll spend 3–4 hours in a vehicle; the day is long; private tours are expensive for couples. Who it suits: red-wine lovers, architecture fans, and anyone staying 3 or more nights.
(d) Navarra winery day trips
Navarra is just over an hour south-east, past Pamplona. Its wine villages and castles get far fewer visitors than Rioja’s. Highlights include Olite, with its fairytale Royal Palace and the historic Bodegas Ochoa; Señorío de Arínzano, a single-estate “Pago” appellation, where you can even visit by quad bike; and Castillo de Monjardín on the Camino de Santiago. Tours are mostly private and quoted on request; Tripadvisor lists 7–8-hour private Olite tours. Navarra rosado and Garnacha are the wines to try.
Best for: repeat visitors, Pamplona combos, travellers who want to avoid the Rioja crowds.
(e) French Basque Country & Irouléguy
About 1.5 hours away in the foothills of the Pyrenees, near Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, Irouléguy grows its vines on steep terraces. It’s often described as one of France’s smallest appellations, and it’s the country’s only Basque one. The Cave d’Irouléguy cooperative runs one-hour discovery tours and tastings from about €15 (minimum 4 people). Estates such as Arretxea and Ilarria welcome visitors by appointment. From San Sebastián, most people go with a private driver or combine it with a coastal “Flavours of the French Basque Country” day (about 8 hours).
Best for: two-countries-in-a-day travellers and anyone who wants rustic reds and mountain scenery.
(f) Wine-shop and wine-bar tastings in the city
- Curdelón (Gros, Paseo Colón 35): our favourite for a sit-down tasting.
- Guided 1-hour tastings at €60 pp for 5 wines (choose “Spanish” or “New & Old World”) with three food pairings. Minimum 2 people; book ahead.
- Around 30 wines by the glass, changing weekly.
- You can open any of roughly 1,500 bottles from the shop for a €6 corkage fee.
- Goñi Ardoteka (Calle Aldamar 3): a family-run wine and gourmet shop with about 1,000 wines. It holds group tastings in a private room downstairs, plus events with winemakers and sommeliers. Prices depend on the event.
- Essencia (General Etxague 2): now a wine shop focused on natural, biodynamic and small Basque producers. The old Gros wine bar closed in 2018. Come for expert, chatty recommendations, not a formal tasting.
- Mimo’s Spanish Wine Tasting (Hotel María Cristina): listed on Viator as about 90 minutes, 8 wines from across Spain with snacks, max 10–12. Check that it’s running and what it costs.
Best for: wine lovers, rainy afternoons and pre-dinner “wine tasting in the city”. Our guide to the best wine bars in San Sebastián covers where to drink once the tasting is over.
(g) Cider houses (sagardotegiak) in Astigarraga & Hernani
Strictly speaking it isn’t wine, but a cider house is one of the most joyful drinking experiences in the Basque Country. During txotx season, when someone shouts “Txotx!”, everyone heads to the giant barrels (kupelas) to catch a thin jet of new cider in their glass. The 2026 season officially opened on 14 January at Petritegi in Astigarraga. Gurutzeta ran from 16 January to 3 May. Our Basque cider houses guide compares the houses, menus and buses.
- Classic menu: chorizo, salt-cod omelette, fried cod with green peppers, a grilled txuleta (bone-in steak), then Idiazabal cheese with quince and walnuts, with unlimited cider.
- 2026 prices:
- Gurutzeta: €47, with a €37 weekday menu and a vegan menu.
- Etxeberria: €46.
- Petritegi: €44.50 for its meat-free menu.
- Some (Petritegi, Alorrenea) serve the menu almost all year.
- Guided: on GetYourGuide, the Traditional Cider House Tour with Lunch ($96, 4.9/5 from more than 180 reviews) includes transport from a meeting point in the city, a guided visit and the full cider-house lunch. Local Experts' Basque Cider House Tour from San Sebastián ($128) is rated 4.4/5 from 18 reviews.
(h) Private, luxury and combined food & wine experiences
- Private pintxos & wine tours:
- Mimo: €175–€290 per person, depending on group size.
- Both GetYourGuide tours in the table above have a private option: Devour’s Pintxos and Wine Tour and the pintxo tasting paired with wines. Basque Guides' Private Pintxos Basque-Tapas Tour ($209 per person, 4.9/5 from 11 reviews) is private only. More options are on our private pintxos and wine tours page and in our guide to private wine tastings in San Sebastián.
- Cooking classes with wine pairing:
- Devour’s Basque Cooking Class, Wine & Cider Tasting: four dishes cooked with a local chef in a family-run restaurant kitchen, each with a drink pairing, in a group of ten or fewer. $161, rated 4.8/5 from more than 140 reviews.
- Mimo (in Hotel María Cristina): Traditional Basque Cuisine and Michelin Secrets classes (5 h) at €230; a short Tortilla, Croquetas & Pil Pil class (3 h) at €130. All end with lunch and wine.
- A Taste of Spain’s private gastronomic-society class: €315–€395 pp.
- The Basque Culinary Center runs public courses; check its current schedule.
- Multi-day luxury:
- Tauck’s 7-day San Sebastián & Rioja trip: from $7,390 pp.
- Grape Escapes’ Rioja/San Sebastián/Bilbao trip: from £2,472 pp.

How to choose: the decision guide
By traveller type
- First-timers: an evening pintxos & wine tour on your first or second night, so you use what you learn for the rest of the trip.
- Wine lovers: Curdelón or Goñi Ardoteka tastings, then a private Rioja day with a family cellar such as El Fabulista or Remírez de Ganuza on the list. Ask your operator about Hondarrabi Beltza rosé and late-harvest txakoli.
- Couples: a dinner-time pintxos tour, then a Getaria afternoon with a sunset drink over the harbour.
- Families: many tours admit children at reduced rates; the San Sebastián Turismo txakoli tour charges €20 under 12 and €50 for ages 12–17. Cooking classes and cider houses suit families best, though some classes are adults-only, so check.
- Groups (6+): cider houses and private pintxos tours (per-person prices drop: Mimo goes from €290 pp for 2 to €175 pp for 8–9).
- Non-drinkers: pintxos tours are fine. Ask for mosto (grape juice), alcohol-free wine or beer, or Basque apple juice. Our gluten-free and alcohol-free guide covers what to order.
- Budget travellers: DIY Getaria by bus, cider-house menus, or your own txikiteo (a pintxo plus a glass is often €4–€7).
- Luxury travellers: a private Rioja day with lunch and a stay at the Marqués de Riscal hotel, or a Michelin dinner with wine pairing.

What to expect on a San Sebastián pintxos & wine tour, step by step
- Meet (18:30-ish). Your guide meets you at a central landmark in the Old Town and asks about allergies.
- Stop 1: txakoli and a gilda. The bartender pours the txakoli from a height to wake up its bubbles. The gilda (olive, guindilla pepper, anchovy) has been called the first pintxo.
- Stop 2: a hot pintxo from the kitchen. You learn that the best pintxos are often ordered off the blackboard and cooked to order, not taken from the counter.
- Stop 3: Rioja Alavesa red. Often a young, carbonic-maceration “cosechero” or a crianza, with something meaty such as a steak pintxo. Devour pairs a sirloin pintxo with a Navarra red.
- Stop 4: seafood or a local classic. Txangurro (spider crab), anchovies, or a bacalao dish with a Navarra rosado or another txakoli.
- Stop 5: something surprising. Basque cider, a natural wine, or a sweet Pedro Ximénez with a famous Basque cheesecake.
- Wrap-up (~21:30). You leave with a list of bars to try on your own.
Our what to expect on a pintxos tour guide compares durations, tastings and drinks across every tour on this site.
Etiquette & tips:
- Order a “txikito” (a small glass of wine) at the bar.
- Pay at the end. Many bars track what you’ve had; just tell them honestly.
- Don’t stay long at any one bar. Throwing napkins on the floor is a thing of the past, so use the bin.
- Tipping: not expected in bars. For guides, 5–10% for great service is appreciated but optional; check your listing, because gratuities are not included on the walking tours we compare.
- Dietary needs: most operators handle vegetarian, pescatarian and gluten-free diets with notice. Coeliac guests should say so at booking because of shared fryers; see our guide to gluten-free and alcohol-free options.
- Age: the legal drinking age in Spain is 18. Children can usually join food tours, but they get soft drinks, and some Old Town tours are not recommended for under-15s.
- Accessibility: Old Town streets are mostly flat and pedestrianised but crowded. Many bars have a step at the door. Devour’s Centro tour lists itself as not wheelchair accessible, so ask before you book.
Self-guided wine trips
Getaria & Zarautz by bus
- Lurraldebus lines UK09, UK10 and UK11 run San Sebastián–Zarautz–Getaria–Zumaia about every 30 minutes. The trip takes about 35–60 minutes depending on the route; Getaria is about 25 km away.
- Fares (2026):
- Cash ticket: €2.90 each way.
- Anonymous Mugi card: €1.16 per trip (the card itself costs €5).
- A fare change was agreed in July 2026, so check before you travel.
- Alternative: the Euskotren train to Zarautz, then a short bus or a walk along the coast.
- Booking the winery: email or use the winery’s web form a few days ahead (Txomin Etxaniz confirms visits by email). Gaintza is a short walk up from the Getaria bus stop.
Rioja Alavesa by car or bus
- By car: about 1.5–2 hours via the A-1/N-1 and Vitoria-Gasteiz. Many wineries need reservations, especially at weekends, so book ahead.
- By public transport: possible but slow. Bus to Vitoria-Gasteiz, then a regional bus to Laguardia. Check timetables carefully; we don’t recommend it for a day trip.
- Book direct: Marqués de Riscal, El Fabulista and others take online bookings. The Visit Rioja Alavesa tourism portal sells winery packages.
Drink-driving in Spain
- Current limits:
- 0.5 g/l blood alcohol (0.25 mg/l breath) for most drivers.
- 0.3 g/l (0.15 mg/l) for novice drivers (first two years) and professional drivers.
- Over 0.60 mg/l in breath is a criminal offence.
- Proposed change: on 29 September 2026 Congress voted 173 to 168, with the PNV abstaining, to start debating a PSOE bill setting 0.2 g/l in blood (0.1 mg/l in breath) for all drivers (reported by Infobae). It is not law yet: the new limit would only take effect once published in the BOE, Spain’s official gazette.
- Our advice: if you’re tasting, don’t drive. Spit, assign a non-drinking driver, or book a tour with transport.
When to go: the wine calendar
| Month | What’s happening | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| January | Txakolin Eguna, Getaria (17 January, San Antón; in 2026 a Saturday): the new vintage is presented and poured by about 23 DO wineries. Txotx season opens (14 Jan in 2026) | Book cider houses for weekends |
| February–April | Cider-house season in full swing | Some cider houses stay open into early May |
| May–June | Vines in flower; long evenings. Haro Wine Battle, traditionally 29 June | Warm, green, good visiting weather |
| July–August | Peak season; Old Town crowds | Book tours 2–4 weeks ahead |
| September | Txakoli harvest (2026: began late August, officially closed 24 Sept; the DO regulatory council estimates 5.5–6 million kg, the largest since the denomination was created, per Vinetur). Rioja Alavesa Harvest Festival (31st edition on 13 Sept 2026 in Kripan’s plaza del Coso, with 16 wine stands, per Noticias de Álava; it moves to a different village each year, usually on the second Sunday) | The busiest time for wineries; book ahead |
| October | Rioja harvest (most of it). Txakoli wineries are busy in the cellar | Autumn colour in the vineyards |
| November–December | Quiet wineries, cosy bars | Short days; check winter opening hours |
Weather: San Sebastián is green because it rains. Bring a light rain jacket in any season. Rioja Alavesa is drier and sunnier, and warm in mid-September.
Booking tips
- How far ahead:
- Summer and weekends: 2–4 weeks for pintxos tours, longer for private Rioja days. Tripadvisor says one popular Getaria tour is booked 32 days ahead on average.
- Off-season: a few days is usually fine.
- Cancellation: most OTA listings offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Private tours often need 48–72 hours’ notice. Read the terms before you pay.
- Signs of a great tour:
- Small groups (8–10).
- Named, local guides.
- Clear numbers on what’s included (“8 pintxos + 4 drinks”).
- Local wines, not just generic Rioja.
- A take-home list of bars.
- Dietary needs handled at booking.
- Red flags:
- Vague inclusions (“tastings”).
- Groups of 15 or more in narrow bars.
- The same tourist-trap stops every night.
- Hidden extras.
- Day trips that spend more time driving than tasting.
- Questions to ask an operator:
- How many wines/pintxos, and which local wines?
- Maximum group size?
- Which neighbourhood, and do the stops change?
- Can you handle [your allergy, vegetarian or gluten-free needs]?
- Are tips, transport and entry fees included?
- What’s the cancellation policy?

Most reputable operators can do vegetarian, gluten-free and alcohol-free versions if you tell them when you book. Coeliacs should mention cross-contamination.
Do I need to tip my guide?
Tipping isn’t expected in Spanish bars. For guides, 5–10% is a kind gesture for great service but optional.
When is cider-house season?
Txotx season runs from mid-January to about late April or early May (in 2026 it opened on 14 January). Some cider houses serve the menu all year.
What’s the drink-driving limit in Spain?
0.5 g/l blood alcohol for most drivers and 0.3 g/l for novice and professional drivers. A bill to lower it to 0.2 g/l is being debated after a 173–168 vote in Congress on 29 September 2026, but it isn’t law until published in the BOE.
Where to start
For a first night in San Sebastián, a three-hour pintxos and wine walk is hard to beat. Devour’s Pintxos and Wine Tour takes you through five Old Town bars with eight pintxos and four drinks, starting with cider poured from a height and finishing on a dessert wine, from $120 (our breakdown). If you’re staying longer, combine it with a Getaria or Rioja day.
Caveats: OTA prices (Viator, GetYourGuide) change with group size, currency and date; euro figures from operator sites are the most reliable. Several winery visit prices (Txomin Etxaniz, Gaintza, Ysios, Baigorri) and the Navarra and Irouléguy tour prices could not be fully confirmed from official 2026 pages. The Lurraldebus fare change and the 0.2 g/l drink-driving bill were both still pending when this guide was written (October 2026).
